Drexel University sororities are in a crisis after unexpected tariffs were imposed last Friday by the US president, driving up the essential cost of cheese and wine in highly populated areas.
Drexel Social Chair of Delta Gamma Brie Thompson opened up and expressed her anger towards the president’s decision with her statement, “Oh hell no…” as she examined the price of her favorite charcuterie boards online. Brie spent several minutes searching the internet for a reasonable price. Unfortunately, every local store in Philadelphia has been impacted by the tariff and the price of cheese and wine has significantly increased overnight.
Congress’s decision shocked millions of college students and sorority members across Philadelphia. In a CBS news segment, one member of Congress anonymously addressed the public about the decision. They explained that the decision was “kind of random” and a “surprise” to everyone in Congress as well. They mentioned that a person in a blue dragon costume walked into last week’s meeting abruptly and proposed the tariff as a strategy to reduce exclusive school expenditures for pledge events. The anonymous Congress member mentioned that, at first, they disagreed that putting a tariff on cheese and wine had any correlation to school funding or Greek Life. However, when asked about how the decision went through, the Congress member explained that the dragon “ just had an aura to him,” so everyone just went along with it. Neither the Congress member nor the individual in the dragon costume has been identified.
However, what remains certain is that this decision has thrown sorority members at Drexel University into a sudden state of panic. Charcuterie boards with cheese and wine are the two primary sources of rush and recruitment events for sororities. If sorority members are unable to afford them, this will bring less traffic to the sorority activities and involvement on campus. Similarly, this could lead to a significant 40 percent decrease in sorority interest and drive freshmen away from rushing. If these tariffs continue, this could lead to a stalemate in Greek Life participation on campus and possibly, harm the already nonexistent school spirit on Drexel University’s campus.
